The Airline Operations phase is when you pay your gate maintenance fees and you collect your route operating profits. You collect the net of the two in one transaction, so as long as you are net profit break even or positive, you won't go bankrupt. If you are net profit negative, then you will only go bankrupt if you don't have enough cash to cover your losses.
